Psychiatrist Steps to the Plate–Motherhood is NOT a Medical Disorder — Stop Mother’s Act

A Catalyst for Public Debate: Promoting Openness, Full Disclosure, and Accountability <http://www.ahrp.org>http://www.ahrp.org

An article in TIME Magazine about the "Mother’s Act"– Federal legislation that would require screening all women who give birth for depression–has sparked a cyberspace debate.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1909628-1,00.html

Dr. James Douglas Bremner (psychiatrist at Emory University) joined those of us who challenge the promoters of such legislation by debunking the fundamental flaw in their reasoning:

In his article, "Motherhood is NOT a Medical Disorder" he notes:

"First of all, there is no evidence that women without a prior history of anxiety and depression have any increased risk of getting post partum depression. So to screen all moms as if giving birth is a risk factor for depression is ridiculous."

Second: "whenever you start screening the general population, you get into problems with over-identification of people and an increase in the number of people that go on antidepressants."

Third: "I am opposed to mandatory screenings of the population, like Teenscreen, which are bonanzas for the pharmaceutical industry, but a major intrusion into the privacy and autonomy of American citizens."

Of note, the "Mother’s Act" was ostensibly prompted by the suicide of Melanie Blocker-Stokes, who leaped to her death from her hotel room in Chicago three months after the birth of her daughter. However, what is ignored by the promoters–most notably industry funded psychiatrists and industry front groups (who call themselves "advocates") is that Melanie Blocker-Stokes had already been treated with multiple courses of psychotropic drugs and electro-convulsive therapy. So, how exactly would her life have been saved by "screening"??? See:

This is but an example of stealth marketing: the pharmaceutical industry with the help of an army of industry supported medical lackeys are medicalizing normal stages of life–including childhood, adolescence, and motherhood. They are promoting public health policies that would vastly increase the size of the market for psychoactive drugs–even as these drugs toxic, life-threatening hazards require Black Box label warnings.

To wit, TIME quotes University of Pittsburgh psychiatrist, Katherine Wisner, MD stating ""Postpartum depression is not a benign, uncommon thing…. Why don’t we screen women for this?" What TIME failed to disclose is that Dr. Wisner is listed on the speakers bureau for Pfizer and Lilly, makers of the antidepressants, Zoloft and Prozac–drugs that carry Black Box label warnings about increased risks of suicide.

Reality: Doctors who serve on pharmaceutical speaker’s bureaus give "promotional talks" on behalf of the company that pays them–the service they render for pay is to advertise drugs to other doctors–despite the confirmed evidence of these drugs serious hazards.

Most of such market-driven prescribing violates medicine’s first principle, "First, do no harm." Indeed, such prescribing does far more harm than good, as individual’s best interest is ignored.

An unfortunate error in the original TIME article–the one that hit the newsstands–misstated Amy Philo’s experience as becoming seriously suicidal and homicidal following the birth of her child. In fact those violent feelings emerged AFTER being prescribed Zoloft:

"she started having suicidal and homicidal thoughts, which got stronger when another doctor raised her dosage. Eventually, Philo says, she weaned herself off the drug, and her violent feelings disappeared."

A correction on the TIME website states:

"The original version of this article stated that after Amy Philo’s newborn suffered an accidental choking incident, Philo’s preoccupation with his safety included fear of hurting her baby herself. However, Philo says that particular feeling did not intrude until later, after she began taking antidepressant medication."

Dad accused of injuring baby

The father and an uncle of a 5-month-old Keystone Heights girl have been arrested on child abuse-related charges. The baby’s mother is under investigation by state officials as well in connection with the same abuse allegation.

The baby’s injuries were reported to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office and state child abuse hot line after she was taken to Shands at the University of Florida on Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Mueller said the baby’s right thigh bone – her femur – was broken into two pieces. Mueller’s report on the incident also noted that the baby had a bruised imprint of her father’s hand on her lower leg.

A man identified as the baby’s father, Teddy C. Blevins, 20, was charged with aggravated child abuse.

A man identified as Blevins’ brother and roommate, Luis M. Linton, 27, was charged with accessory to child abuse.

The baby reportedly lives in a home at 6022 S.E. Fourth Ave. in Keystone Heights along with her mother, Rachel Jones, 21. Blevins and Linton also reside at the home, authorities said.

According to Jones’ version of the events, she was asleep in bed early Wednesday when Blevins brought the baby in to her at about 6:30 a.m. and claimed the child would not quit crying.

Jones told investigators that she noticed the baby’s leg was swollen but did not immediately take her for medical care.

"The mom (Jones) is on probation for aggravated battery (not related to the child) and was scheduled to meet with her probation officer that morning, so she took the child with her to the meeting and then, in the afternoon, took the child to Shands," Mueller said.

Mueller said the baby has been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families until an investigation can be completed on Jones’ ability to care for and protect the baby.

Mueller said Blevins and Linton were questioned separately about the baby’s injuries and "first lied but then admitted to what had happened."

Blevins eventually claimed that the baby’s crying woke him, Mueller said.

Mueller said that Blevins "aggressively picked the victim up by the leg and tossed the victim from her stomach to her back."

Mueller said Linton initially lied to investigators by claiming Blevins was in another part of the house when the baby’s injury was discovered by Jones.

Blevins and Linton were being held at the Bradford County jail on Thursday.

Jones was allowed to return to the home where the three adults had been living, but was denied contact with the baby, at least until the state investigation is completed, Mueller said.

Father arrested after three family members killed in Manchester house fire

A man was arrested today on suspicion of murder following a blaze which killed a teenager and her two young brothers.

It is understood the 37-year-old suspect was the father of some of the nine children who were caught up in the blaze which swept through the family home in Openshaw, Greater Manchester.

Carly Swift, 19, Jordan Swift, 14, and John Hargreaves, eight, all died in hospital after the fire at the modern three-storey house in the early hours of yesterday.

The victims’ mother, Susan Owen, 47, managed to escape from the house with her other children, Ashley Swift, 17, Louis Swift, 11, Connor Hargreaves, nine, Alice Hargreaves, five, and Reece Hargreaves, three. Two other children who were staying as guests were unharmed.

Mrs Owen’s partner, Kevin Hargreaves, 37, suffered burns in the incident after it is believed he jumped from the top floor window.

He is in a poorly but stable condition in hospital.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in police custody.

"A joint police and fire service investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire."

Miss Swift died shortly after the blaze which broke out at the address in Herne Street, off Ashton Old Road, at around 5am.

Jordan, a pupil at Wright Robinson School in Gorton, and John, who studied at C of E School of the Resurrection in Beswick, both suffered 90% burns and died later in the day.

Neighbours said fire was "billowing" out of the windows from all directions as the children’s mother was seen screaming in the street crying for help.

Online tributes from Miss Swift’s friends were posted on the social networking website Facebook.

Miss Swift was studying hospitality and catering at Manchester College of Arts and Technology, and was said to have dreamed about becoming a chef.

Borough Commander Bill Harrop, of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said it was a "serious fire" which ripped through the first and second floors.

If anyone has any information regarding the circumstances of the fire please contact police on 0161 856 3691 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Where Is The Asylum For American Women?

SUSAN MURPHY MILANO’S JOURNAL

Where Is The Asylum For American Women?

Apparently, our government is seriously considering granting asylum for battered women from other countries. Now there is a concept! Curious, I contacted a church that helps those granted asylum and learned when our government provides assistance, the person is given housing, placed on public aide amounting to approximately $2,000 a month and in many cases a second hand vehicle so they can get around. And other perks depending on the individual’s needs. We cannot take care of victims of abuse in our own country. Why are we extending a hand to foreigners? Is the abusedifferent or more life threatening from the women in our owncountry?
Women whom are born in United States are living in the same conditions as those the government has offered to help with little to no options for safety and proper services to escape their abusers. I personally know several hundred women whom arebeaten, raped, kept like prisoners in their own homes and forced to deal with their abusers one way or the other or else they will bekilled, identical life threatening situations as the women in theNew York Times article. Where is the asylum for Americanwomen?
If our government can come up with a way to house, educate and find jobs for battered women from other countries in this economy, we should first have a system in place for Americanwomen before we start offering a safe haven to immigrants.
Do not misunderstand. I am about helping battered women, but let us help those where we have the greatest need, and the highest mortality rate, right here in the good old United States.
