Senator Thune’s (R-SD) amendment was defeated in today’s vote. 60 votes were needed for the amendment to pass; the final vote was 58-39. YOU DID IT!
The amendment would have allowed gun owners who have a concealed carry permit issued in one state to travel with that gun(s) to any of the 45 other states that allow concealed carry permits. Under the Thune amendment, states would have been required to honor a concealed carry permit from another state-even if the states have very different requirements for issuing these permits.
The amendment would have meant that people who have moved to a new state to avoid violent situations would no longer be as safe, since their former family member, or partner, could now get a concealed carry permit in one state and travel with a concealed weapon to the new state, even if the new state does not allow concealed carry permits to be issued to gun owners with a history of domestic violence, etc.
Thanks to your hard work, domestic violence offenders WILL NOT be able to legally conceal a weapon in states that have legislation forbidding them to do so and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault who have fled their home states seeking safety can rest a little more assured that they’ll remain safe in their new home states.
